Andrew Hicks is an Associate Professor at Cornell University, affiliated with the Department of Music, Department of Classics, and the Carl Sagan Institute. He directs the Program in Medieval Studies and serves on editorial boards including the Journal of Medieval Latin and TEAMS. Previously, he was the House Professor-Dean of Hans Bethe House (2019–2025).
His research bridges medieval music theory, Pythagoreanism, and textual criticism, with a focus on cross-cultural exchanges between Latin, Greek, Persian, and Arabic traditions. Articles like Reading Texts within Texts (2022) and Mysticism’s Musical Modalities (2019) highlight his interdisciplinary approach to cosmology, philosophy, and Persian literature.
Hicks has received prestigious scientific awards, including the ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor/Virgil Thomson Award (2018) and the Berlin Prize (2018). He has published extensively on medieval Latin texts, Pythagorean traditions, and musical metaphors in classical Persian works.
