Andrew Grotzinger is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado Boulder, affiliated with the Institute for Behavioral Genetics (IBG). He holds a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin (2021). His research focuses on developing and applying multivariate genomic methods to study psychiatric and cognitive traits, particularly in aging-related neurocognitive decline and dementia. He is also investigating genetic links between immune-mediated diseases and psychiatric disorders, employing cutting-edge techniques like Genomic Structural Equation Modeling (GSEM) and Genomic Network Analysis (GNA).
Dr. Grotzinger leads a lab comprising graduate students (Luke Schaffer, Jeremy Lawrence, Sophie Breunig) and postdoctoral researchers (Isy Foote), emphasizing collaborative projects in behavioral, psychiatric, and statistical genetics. He currently oversees multiple grants, including NIH-funded projects on genomic analysis of aging-related cognitive change and multivariate genetic architecture of psychiatric diseases.
His research integrates statistical genetics, molecular biology, and computational methods to dissect complex genetic architectures. Recent work highlights his lab’s contributions to understanding genetic pathways unique to autism spectrum disorder, shared liabilities across psychiatric and medical conditions, and the role of immune systems in mental health. Dr. Grotzinger actively recruits students for Fall 2025 admissions through CU Boulder’s Behavioral, Psychiatric, and Statistical Genetics (BPSG) program.
