Gregory's research focuses primarily on ancient science, with special emphasis on the presocratics, cosmology and cosmogony. His work explores the relationship between religion and science, as well as connections between magic and scientific thought in historical contexts. He has made notable contributions to understanding figures like William Harvey and the development of early Greek philosophies of nature. Recent publications demonstrate an expanding research agenda that bridges traditional history of science with contemporary interdisciplinary approaches, including gender perspectives in ancient scientific thought.
His publication record shows a consistent focus on ancient Greek philosophy and science, particularly examining pre-Socratic thinkers like Anaximander, Democritus, and Pythagoras. The most recent works (2023-2025) indicate a growing interest in gender studies within ancient science and continued exploration of classical texts through modern scholarly lenses.
Professor Gregory actively contributes to the academic community through service and leadership. He has organized the London Ancient Science Conference annually since 2000, with the 18th conference scheduled for April 2025. He also serves as a referee for prominent journals including Phronesis, Apeiron, CQ, BJHP, ESM, BJHS, and Ancient Philosophy.
His teaching portfolio reflects his research expertise, including undergraduate and postgraduate courses on Science in the Ancient World, Science in Antiquity, Science Meets Religion in a Global Context, and Science and Religion. These courses demonstrate his commitment to connecting historical perspectives with contemporary discussions about science's role in society.
