Andrew Greg is an Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Culture & Creative Arts, University of Glasgow, based in the History of Art department. His work involves collaboration with major institutions including the Victoria and Albert Museum, Royal Academy, Apsley House, Public Catalogue Foundation, and BBC.
Greg's research centers on art historical documentation and public access to cultural heritage. As Project Director of the National Inventory of Continental European Paintings (NICE Paintings), he manages a Kress Foundation-funded initiative documenting European artworks in UK collections. His pioneering work on 'Your Paintings Tagger' leverages crowdsourcing for metadata creation in the BBC's national art catalog, bridging traditional scholarship with digital innovation.
His publications (2004-2014) demonstrate an evolution from biographical entries in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography toward digital humanities research. Key themes include national art inventories, virtual collections, and public participation in cultural documentation, reflecting interdisciplinary work spanning art history, information science, and community engagement.
Greg has secured substantial research funding:
- National Inventory Research Project (2004-2008): Getty Foundation (£209,835), AHRC (£327,930), Kress Foundation (£8,125), Pilgrim Trust (£3,926), National Gallery Trust (£96,701)
- NIRP @ V&A (2009-2011): Kress Foundation (£55,901), Chancellor’s Fund (£11,852), V&A (£11,502)
- American Art Project (2009): Terra Foundation (£6,602), Henry Luce Foundation (£6,395)
- Public Catalogue Foundation (2010-2011): £38,899
As an MLitt dissertation supervisor and External Member of the 'Your Paintings' Advisory Panel, Greg contributes to academic training and national art cataloging strategy. His leadership in the National Inventory Research Project has established him as a key figure in UK art documentation, with ongoing work at the intersection of museum practice and digital public engagement.
