Andrew Gouldstone is a Professor and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Affairs in the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University's College of Engineering. His research focuses on biomechanics, material science, and engineering mechanics with specializations in lung mechanics, thermal spray coatings, and heterogeneous systems. He holds a PhD from MIT (2001) and conducted postdoctoral work at Harvard School of Public Health. His work is funded by NSF grants including a CAREER Award (2005).
Education includes B.S. and Ph.D. from MIT's Materials Science & Engineering (1996, 2001), followed by NIH postdoctoral research at Harvard. He previously served as faculty at SUNY Stony Brook (2003-2007) before joining Northeastern. Awards include 2022 Faculty Research Team Award and 2014 COE Fellow.
Research projects span sub-THz satellite networks (NSF-funded), lung mechanics via indentation studies, and thermal spray coating mechanics. His lab uses optical coherence tomography for lung deformation analysis and explores nanoporous metallic surfaces through thermal spray innovation. He advises student groups like Northeastern Electric Racing and mentors PEAK Experiences scholars.
Key contributions include understanding atelectasis mechanics in lungs, bubble dynamics in metallic splats, and interdisciplinary programs like Bringing Education and Lifelong Learning to Adults (BELLA). Current grants include $750K NSF support for sub-THz satellite communication platforms.
