Dr Andrew Foey is an Associate Professor of Immunology at the University of Plymouth's School of Biomedical Sciences. As School Post-Graduate Research Coordinator (2020-date) and Pathway Lead for Infection & Immunity (2010-date), he contributes to research and education in mucosal immunity, macrophage biology, and probiotic immunomodulation. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals including Responsible Consumption and Production, and Good Health and Well-being.
Research Interests: Foey's work focuses on immune stimulation versus suppression mechanisms in mucosal environments, including probiotic interactions with macrophages, antimicrobial peptides, and dietary influences on immune responses. His leadership in Nutritional Immunology & Biomedicine modules and contributions to clinical immunology education highlight his interdisciplinary approach.
Supervision:
- Co-supervised 10 PhD candidates (2005-2021) on topics including probiotic modulation of immunity, tolerogenic mechanisms in chronic infections, and macrophage subset regulation
- Mentored multiple ResM and MSc students (2018-2024)
Awards:
- Inaugural Immunology Teaching Excellence Award (2017, British Society for Immunology)
