Professor Andrew Flatau serves as the inaugural Dean of Dentistry and Oral Health within the Centre for Rural Dentistry and Oral Health at Charles Sturt University, embedded in the School of Dentistry and Medical Sciences. Appointed Head of the School of Dentistry and Health Sciences on 14 April 2020, he transitioned to Dean following the 2021 university restructure. Holding BDS(Hons), BA(Hons), and PhD qualifications from the University of Sydney, he provides academic leadership while maintaining critical relationships with professional associations and communities.
His educational background includes:
- BDS(Hons) with University Medal from the University of Sydney (1982)
- BA(Hons) from the University of Sydney (1988)
- PhD from the University of Sydney (2001) for research on 'The anatomy of the infratemporal fossa: dissections and historical representations'
Professor Flatau's research centers on dental education scholarship, focusing on reflective and inter-professional practice, competency frameworks, and graduate work-readiness. His work integrates threshold concepts to refine curricula and ensure quality assurance in dental education, addressing contemporary challenges through evidence-based pedagogy.
Publication trends reveal dual expertise: recent works emphasize pandemic-era dental education and competency frameworks, while earlier research explores temporomandibular joint anatomy and clinical implications. This evolution reflects his transition from anatomical specialist to dental education leader, maintaining relevance through scholarship of teaching and learning.
As elected representative of the Australian Council of Dental Schools on the Australian Dental Council’s Professional Competencies Advisory Committee (2021-2022), he shaped national standards for new dental practitioners. His co-authored textbook chapters on TMJ anatomy (1990) and salivary glands (1995) demonstrate enduring anatomical expertise alongside educational leadership.
Leading the Centre for Rural Dentistry and Oral Health, he directs partnerships with rural communities and healthcare providers to advance accessible dental education and practice across regional Australia, focusing on sustainable workforce development.
