Dr. Andrew Fenton is a Lecturer in Microbial Pathogenesis at the School of Biosciences, University of Sheffield, based at the Florey Institute since 2016. His academic journey includes postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School (2013-2016) with Tom Bernhardt and David Rudner, research at Newcastle University's Centre for Bacterial Cell Biology (2010-2013) under Kenn Gerdes, and a PhD at the University of Nottingham (2006-2010) supervised by Liz Sockett.
His research centers on molecular mechanisms of bacterial cell growth and division in host environments, specializing in Streptococcus pneumoniae pathogenesis. Key interests include:
- Cell wall biosynthesis coordination during growth/division
- Host-pathogen interactions in pneumonia/meningitis
- Antibiotic resistance mechanisms
- Immune evasion strategies
- Environmental adaptation within hosts
Methodologically, his lab employs genetic screens, biochemical assays, and epifluorescence microscopy. Recent publications reveal trends in pneumococcal resistance evolution, host defense mechanisms, and predatory bacterial dynamics. His scientific contributions span antibiotic resistance pathways, cell division regulation, and bacterial predation ecology.
Fenton actively supervises research projects and teaches MBB163 Microbiology. His lab welcomes postdoctoral fellows applying for fellowships and student interns interested in bacterial pathogenesis research.
