Research Interests
Mr. Dhuey's practice centers on high-stakes intellectual property disputes across patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secret domains, with particular emphasis on appellate strategy. His work frequently intersects technology law and creative industries, exemplified by the landmark "Monkey Selfie" case (Naruto v. Slater) where he successfully defended photographer David Slater against PETA's copyright claim on behalf of a crested macaque. This case demonstrated innovative application of authorship principles in digital media contexts and resulted in his district court brief being anthologized in the Aspen Handbook for Legal Writers as exemplary legal advocacy.
Scientific Awards
- Appellate Lawyer of the Week, National Law Journal (August 5, 2010)
Teaching and Professional Impact
Mr. Dhuey directs the Intellectual Property and Technology Law Clinic (course 6710), mentoring law students in real-world IP litigation. His 2017 law.com profile highlighted how his boutique practice achieved outsized impact through strategically selected cases, including two major IP victories that reshaped industry approaches to digital copyright. Though not a traditional academic researcher, his courtroom victories and legal writing serve as practical scholarship influencing contemporary intellectual property jurisprudence.
