Andrew Christopher Pickering is a Professor of Economics at the University of York, affiliated with the Department of Economics and Related Studies. He has held previous roles including Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Reader in Economics. His research focuses on political economics, with a particular emphasis on polarization, government debt, media influence, and austerity policies. He currently leads or collaborates on projects such as the CORNELIA initiative on corruption and female political participation and the 'Democracies in Transition' study on Southern Europe's political dynamics.
Key research projects include exploring corruption’s impact on political engagement (CORNELIA, 2020–2022) and analyzing austerity’s societal effects. He has presented invited talks on topics like electoral accountability and policing in the UK (2022–2023). As Editor-in-Chief of the Bulletin of Economic Research, he contributes to academic peer-review processes.
His academic activities span conference participations, editorial roles, and lectures. He is actively supervising PhD students in theoretical and empirical political economics research.
