Andrew Carroll, III is a Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine, with a concurrent appointment as Senior Scientist at the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center. His academic journey includes a PhD in Physiology from UAB (1979), NIH Postdoctoral Fellowship in Medical Genetics (1979-1982), and board certifications as a Medical Geneticist and Clinical Cytogeneticist from the American Board of Medical Genetics (1982-present).
Dr. Carroll's research focuses on genomic determinants of outcomes in acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), Down syndrome-associated leukemia, and various genetic disorders. His work spans pediatric oncology, cytogenetics, and pharmacogenomics, with particular emphasis on how genetic variations affect treatment response and disease progression. Current projects include investigating chromosome segregation errors in trisomic disorders, analyzing racial disparities in acute myeloid leukemia outcomes, and studying the genomic landscape of Down syndrome-associated ALL.
His recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on precision oncology, with numerous high-impact papers in Nature Communications, JAMA, Blood, and the Journal of Clinical Oncology. These works examine genomic risk stratification, minimal residual disease monitoring, and targeted therapies for childhood leukemias. Dr. Carroll is actively involved in Children's Oncology Group trials, contributing to major clinical research efforts that shape treatment protocols for pediatric cancer patients.
Dr. Carroll has received continuous research funding and maintains active collaborations across multiple institutions. His work on pharmacogenomics has identified important racial disparities in treatment response, particularly regarding the ara-C pharmacogenomics score (ACS10) and its association with survival outcomes in diverse patient populations.

As an educator, Dr. Carroll serves on graduate committees, including for Eric S Goetzman's dissertation. His laboratory and clinical research activities involve multiple trainees and collaborators working on cutting-edge genomic analyses of hematologic malignancies. Current projects include developing novel risk stratification tools for ALL patients and investigating the molecular basis of treatment resistance in high-risk leukemias.
