Andrew Carlisle is an Artist Lecturer in Bagpipe and Director of Piping at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) School of Music, where he has transformed the CMU Pipes and Drums into a leading U.S. pipe band. He joined CMU in 2010 and holds roles as adjudicator with the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association since 2010. A globally renowned solo piper, he has performed across 20+ countries, including historic performances at The White House (2008) and Oz Stadium (Sydney, 2010).
His expertise spans traditional Celtic music performance, with a focus on the Great Highland Bagpipe, Scottish Border Pipes, and smallpipes. Since 2012, he has directed the Virginia International Tattoo, a prestigious annual event with 900 performers. Andrew’s adjudication career includes evaluations for solo pipers and bands, alongside his role as a senior arranger for the Tattoo.
He is a member of the award-winning Field Marshal Montgomery Pipe Band, contributing to 45+ championships, and has recorded albums like ‘Re:Charged’ and ‘Impact’. A BBC documentary, *The Castle Session* (2016), featured his instrumental mastery. His accolades include the Gillies Cup, US Gold Medal, and multiple Macallan Trophies, reflecting his dominance in competitive piping.
Andrew’s leadership revitalized CMU’s pipe band, securing 2019 American Pipe Band Championship titles in both traditional and contemporary categories. His work bridges performance, education, and cultural preservation in Celtic music traditions.
