Andrew Buskell

Andrew Buskell is an Assistant Professor in the School of History and Sociology at the Georgia Institute of Technology, affiliated with the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts and the Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School of Public Policy. His research focuses on the history and philosophy of science, particularly cultural evolution, anthropology, and the ethical implications of scientific practices. He holds a Ph.D. in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Cambridge and previously held postdoctoral positions at Cambridge and the London School of Economics.

Buskell’s current research explores the risks and harms associated with studying human populations and the metaphysics of cultural concepts. He led the grant-funded project 'Culture as a Tool: Reckoning with Past and Future Use' (2023–2024) and co-led 'Culture at the Macro-Scale: Boundaries, Barriers, and Endogenous Change' (2021–2022). His earlier work included a Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship (2019–2022) analyzing cultural groupings and their metaphysical underpinnings.

His publications span cultural evolution theory, open-ended systems, and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding cultural dynamics. Notable works include analyses of cumulative culture, demographic skepticism, and the extended evolutionary synthesis. He has contributed reviews on topics ranging from human nature debates to prediction-based cognitive frameworks.

Buskell’s honors include the Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship. His research bridges philosophy, anthropology, and sociology, addressing both theoretical and applied dimensions of cultural studies. He actively engages in grant-funded initiatives to explore the societal implications of cultural research and its ethical frameworks.
