Andrew Brightman is a Professor of Engineering Practice in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University's College of Engineering. He is also affiliated with the Global Engineering Program (GEP) and the GEP Team. His offices are located in MJIS 1021F (Engineering Administration) and MJIS 1086 (Biomedical Engineering) on the West Lafayette campus.
Professor Brightman's research centers on engineering ethics, diversity and inclusion in engineering education, and the professional formation of engineers. He investigates how ethical reasoning develops in engineering students and faculty, with particular attention to integrating ethics into biomedical engineering curricula. His work addresses organizational cultural conflicts and sustainable diversity initiatives using design thinking methodologies, emphasizing empathic perspective-taking and reflexive principlism frameworks.
His recent publications (2020-2025) reveal a dominant focus on ethical engineering research, ABET diversity/equity/inclusion criteria implementation, and biomedical engineering curriculum innovation. Key trends include NSF-funded projects exploring faculty experiences with ethical research, pandemic impacts on inclusive teaching, and industry-academic partnerships for regulatory science training and clinical translation.
Brightman leads significant research initiatives including the NSF ER2 project and has developed educational resources like PRIME Ethics (Purdue's Reflective & Interactive Modules for Engineering Ethics). He actively contributes to global engineering education through the Global Engineering Program, focusing on institutional change for accessibility and societal impact in engineering pedagogy.
