Andrew Bricker is Associate Professor of English Literature at Ghent University's Department of Literary Studies, with concurrent affiliations including Senior Fellow at the University of Virginia's Andrew W. Mellon Society of Fellows in Critical Bibliography and Principal Investigator for the Horizon Europe-funded DELIAH project. In 2025, he will join the Paris Institute for Advanced Study as part of the CAT collaborative research program.
His research examines intersections of satire, humor, and law, with particular focus on:
- Legal interpretation of ambiguous visual expressions (cartoons, memes)
- Historical development of libel law and satirical jurisprudence
- Forensic analysis of humor in court decisions
- Democratic implications of humorous expression
Bricker's publications demonstrate consistent focus on satire-law dynamics across historical periods, with recent works analyzing 18th-century libel cases alongside contemporary debates about meme interpretation and free speech boundaries. His scholarship employs interdisciplinary methodologies bridging literary theory, legal history, and media studies.
As Principal Investigator for DELIAH, he leads research on democratic literacy through humor, while his Paris IAS project involves international collaboration with legal scholars and cartooning organizations to develop frameworks for analyzing visual humor in judicial contexts.
