Dr. Andrew Blaikie is a Senior Lecturer in Ophthalmology at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the Infection and Global Health Division and the Sir James Mackenzie Institute for Early Diagnosis. He holds honorary positions at Hasanuddin University and the University of Rwanda School of Allied Health Sciences. Clinically, he works part-time as a Consultant Ophthalmologist in NHS Fife, specializing in Paediatrics and Emergency Eye Care. His research focuses on Frugal Diagnostic Tools, Inter-Professional Eye Care Education, Tanzanian Endemic Optic Neuropathy (TEON), and Childhood Cerebral Visual Impairment.
Educated at the University of Edinburgh (MBChB, 1993) and with a Fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology from the Royal Children's Hospital, Brisbane (2005), Dr. Blaikie has led initiatives such as the Visual Impairment Managed Clinical Network (VINCYP) in Scotland and pioneered low-cost diagnostic devices for low-resource settings. His work emphasizes global health equity, interprofessional education, and innovative solutions to address visual impairment in underserved populations.
Dr. Blaikie has received over 25 awards, including recognition for his work in diabetic retinopathy screening and the development of the Arclight diagnostic tool. His research collaborations span Sub-Saharan Africa, Indonesia, and Scotland, with a focus on translating technological and educational innovations into practical healthcare solutions.
