Andrew Barton is an Associate Professor in the Integrative Oceanography Division at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. His research focuses on marine plankton physiology and ecology, climate impacts on marine ecosystems, and interactions between plankton and biogeochemical cycles. He holds a BA from Cornell University, an MS from Cornell, and a PhD from MIT.
- Education:
- B.A. Science of Earth Systems, Cornell University
- M.S. Geological Sciences, Cornell University
- Ph.D. Climate Physics and Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Research interests include marine macroecology, biogeography, biodiversity, and the physiological responses of marine microbes to environmental changes. His work emphasizes the interplay between plankton communities and global biogeochemical cycles under climate variability. Recent studies explore microbial dispersal mechanisms, harmful algal bloom drivers, and Arctic Ocean plankton dynamics.
Publications highlight advancements in trait-based modeling frameworks (e.g., XSO and Phydra libraries) and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding plankton behavior and ecosystem resilience. His research integrates field observations, satellite data, and computational models to address pressing marine ecological questions.
