Andrew Barnes is a Senior Lecturer in Bassoon and Coordinator of Chamber Music at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, part of the University of Sydney. He also serves as Program Leader for the Bachelor of Music (Performance) program. Prior to this role, he held teaching positions at Indiana University School of Music and performed with orchestras including the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra.
Education: Studied bassoon with Marion Stanley and John Cran while pursuing degrees in Economics and Law at Macquarie University. Further studies included a Queen Elizabeth II Scholarship for European training, leading to a Performer Diploma from Indiana University.
Research interests focus on bassoon performance, chamber music coordination, and historical performance practices. His recent work emphasizes contemporary compositions for wind ensembles and interdisciplinary musical collaborations. Over 15 years of professional orchestral experience inform his teaching and performance approaches.
Performance highlights include roles with the Australia Ensemble, New Sydney Wind Quintet, and international tours with the Australian Chamber Orchestra. His performances span classical repertoire to modern compositions, emphasizing technical mastery and expressive interpretation.
Labs/Teams: Active member of the New Sydney Wind Quintet and core contributor to chamber music programs at the Sydney Conservatorium. Coordinates woodwind ensembles and mentors students in advanced performance techniques.
