Andrew A. Gewirth

Roles and Affiliations

Andrew A. Gewirth is the Peter C. and Gretchen Miller Markunas Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the University of Illinois, Department of Chemistry, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. He also holds positions as Professor in the Materials Research Lab and is affiliated with the Department of Chemistry. He joined the faculty in 1988 after postdoctoral work at the University of Texas, Austin.

Education

He earned his A.B. from Princeton University (1981) and Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University (1987).

Research Interests

Gewirth’s research focuses on the structure and reactivity of surfaces and interfaces, including electrochemical double layers, interfacial electrochemistry, and materials properties. Key areas include:

• Electrocatalysis for energy applications (e.g., oxygen reduction, CO₂ conversion)
• Electrodeposition and additive-controlled materials (e.g., copper, nickel)
• Characterization of battery electrolytes and interfacial phenomena
