Professor S. Sampath serves as Chair of the Department of Inorganic and Physical Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, leading research in interfacial phenomena with applications across electrochemistry and energy technologies. His group operates from the Chemical Sciences Building, focusing on experimental materials synthesis and characterization.
His primary research encompasses Surface Chemistry, Electrochemistry, and 2D Materials, with significant contributions to Electrocatalysis and Battery Technology. Key projects investigate exfoliated ternary chalcogenides (MoSSe, PdPS) for oxygen evolution/reduction, transition metal nitrides (TiN, TiC) as corrosion-resistant electrocatalysts, organic thin films for sensing devices, and next-generation energy storage systems including magnesium-based batteries and hybrid capacitors. The group also pioneers molten deep eutectic electrolytes for semiconductor electrodeposition.
Analysis of recent publications (2021-2025) reveals a concentrated research trajectory toward advanced energy materials, particularly sodium-ion battery anodes, solid-state lithium interfaces, zinc-ion cathodes, and 2D material stability. This work demonstrates consistent innovation in bridging fundamental interfacial science with practical clean energy applications, with strong emphasis on electrocatalytic mechanisms and ion transport phenomena.
