Andres Caro

Dr. Andres Caro is a Professor at Hendrix College, where he teaches courses including Chemistry of the Environment, Physical Chemistry Lab, and Advanced Biological Chemistry. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires (1999).

Dr. Caro's research focuses on mitochondrial DNA damage, alcohol/CYP2E1-induced hepatotoxicity, and liver oxidative stress mechanisms. His work explores how CYP2E1-derived free radicals damage mitochondrial DNA and how protective molecules could mitigate alcoholic liver disease.

His research has been funded through multiple grants, including those from NIH, NSF, and Arkansas INBRE, supporting studies on mitochondrial protection, NMR instrumentation, and oxidative stress modulation. His scientific awards include competitive FASEB Travel Awards and Cottrell College Science Awards.

Dr. Caro has mentored numerous students, including Salvador Lorente-Garcia, Etienne Nzabarushimana, and Spencer Sanson, who have co-presented at national conferences such as the Arkansas INBRE Research Conference and ACS National Meetings.
