Dr. Andreia Ionescu is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biology at Northeastern University, joining in 2020. Previously, she served as an Assistant Professor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Her research focuses on skeletal biology, stem cell regulation, and tissue regeneration. She holds a PhD in Biochemistry and Biophysics from the University of Rochester Medical School (2003) and completed postdoctoral training in skeletal biology at Harvard Medical School.
Her work investigates epigenetic regulation of skeletal development and disease, with projects on cartilage/bone interface gene signatures, osteoarthritis mechanisms, and stem cell-based regeneration therapies. Key contributions include identifying FoxA2+ long-term skeletal stem cells and PTHrP+ short-term stem cells in growth plates, supported by NIH and NSF grants. Recent achievements include the 2023 NSF CAREER Award for studying stem cell hierarchies in skeletal growth termination.
