Andrei Chabes is a Professor of Medical Biochemistry at Umeå University's Department of Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics, and Director of the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular Medicine (WCMM). His research focuses on the regulation of deoxyribonucleoside triphosphate (dNTP) pools and their impact on genome stability, DNA replication fidelity, and disease mechanisms such as cancer and aging. Key research areas include the interplay between dNTP levels and DNA damage checkpoints, and how imbalanced dNTP pools drive mutations and genetic disorders.
His work integrates biochemical, genetic, and cellular approaches to understand how metabolic changes in dNTP pools influence replication accuracy, cancer development, and mitochondrial DNA stability. Recent studies highlight the role of RRM2B deficiency in dNTP depletion and the acceleration of tumor formation in mice models.
Chabes leads the Andrei Chabes Lab, which investigates dNTP homeostasis and its implications for genome integrity. His publications span over two decades, with notable contributions to understanding ribonucleotide incorporation, checkpoint signaling, and the mutagenic effects of dNTP imbalances. His lab is affiliated with both the Department of Medical Biochemistry and WCMM, emphasizing translational research in molecular medicine and cancer biology.
