Andreas Stein is a Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota. His research focuses on materials synthesis by templating and self-assembly methods to create porous and nanostructured materials with special properties for applications in energy storage, sensing, and environmental remediation.
Dr. Stein's research interests span multiple areas of materials chemistry and nanotechnology. His work primarily involves the development of novel porous materials through colloidal crystal templating approaches. He investigates how polymeric, surfactant, or colloidal templates can control the architecture of materials to create products with enhanced properties. His research has significant applications in electrochemical sensors, lithium-ion batteries, non-toxic pigments, and environmental remediation. The group's work is characterized by a strong interdisciplinary approach, combining principles from inorganic chemistry, materials science, and electrochemistry to address real-world challenges in energy and healthcare. Students in his lab gain hands-on experience with a wide range of modern instrumentation for materials characterization.
The recent publications of Dr. Stein's research group demonstrate a clear trend toward applications in electrochemical sensing and energy storage. His team has made significant contributions to the development of solid-contact ion-selective electrodes using nanostructured carbon materials, which enable miniaturized and wearable sensor platforms. They have also advanced the understanding of novel cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries, particularly those involving high-lithium compounds. Much of the recent work focuses on the interplay between material structure and electrochemical performance, with an emphasis on creating stable, high-performance devices for practical applications.
- Distinguished McKnight University Professor (University of Minnesota's highest faculty honor)
Dr. Stein has mentored numerous graduate students who have become hands-on users of modern instrumentation for materials characterization. His research has been supported by multiple grants enabling the development of innovative materials synthesis approaches. The interdisciplinary nature of his work has fostered collaborations across chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, and biomedical engineering departments.
The Stein Group operates state-of-the-art laboratories for materials synthesis and characterization, with specialized equipment for creating and analyzing porous and nanostructured materials. The group maintains strong collaborations with other research teams at the University of Minnesota, particularly with Professor Bühlmann's group in the development of electrochemical sensors. Their facilities support the full research cycle from materials design and synthesis through to device fabrication and testing.
