Andreas Stegmann is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Warwick, a position he has held since July 2020. He earned his PhD from CEMFI in Madrid, Spain, and maintains key affiliations with the Centre for Competitive Advantage in the Global Economy (CAGE), J-PAL (as an invited researcher), CEPR (as a research affiliate), and the Centre for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP) (as a Research Fellow).
His research focuses on political economy and development economics through the lens of applied microeconomics, examining how political institutions shape economic outcomes in developing contexts. Core themes include trust in government, elite capture mechanisms, and public service delivery effectiveness, often investigated through field experiments and natural experiments in South and Southeast Asia.
Recent publications reveal a methodological emphasis on quasi-experimental designs to analyze causal relationships in governance and development. Key contributions address the persistent effects of authoritarian regimes on local elites, the role of information in state-citizen trust building, and external interventions' unintended consequences on public health systems, primarily using data from Pakistan and Indonesia.
His collaborative work is supported by affiliations with major research networks including CAGE at Warwick, J-PAL, CEPR, and CERP, which facilitate interdisciplinary policy-relevant research on global economic challenges.
