Prof. Dr. Andreas Nölke is Professor of Political Science with a focus on International Relations and International Political Economy at Goethe University Frankfurt's Faculty of Social Sciences, Institute of Political Science. He has held this position since 2007 and is also associated with the Leibniz Institute for Financial Research SAFE. Nölke serves as associate editor for 'Routledge Studies in Globalisation' and the 'Journal of Economic Policy Reform'.
His educational background includes a Master's degree in Public Administration (1988) and a doctorate in Political Science with distinction (1993), both from the University of Konstanz. He received his Habilitation from Leipzig University in 2004 based on research about transnational policy networks.
Professor Nölke's research spans International Political Economy, Comparative Capitalism, and Governance studies, with particular expertise in financial systems, emerging markets, and EU policy. His work often examines the intersection of economic structures and political power, especially regarding financial infrastructure, geoeconomics, and standards of governance. He has developed a significant body of research analyzing how states navigate global economic constraints while exercising economic statecraft.
His recent publications (2025) demonstrate a strong focus on pluralistic approaches to economics education, the political economy of emerging markets, and infrastructural geoeconomics. Nölke's work frequently addresses how states in the Global South navigate financial globalization, with particular attention to payment systems, stock markets, and innovation policy.
Among his notable recognitions is the Best Paper Award for his article in Finance and Space from the Regional Studies Association.
Nölke has supervised PhD students including Johannes Petry and has been involved in significant research initiatives such as the graduate school 'Standards of Governance.' He has served in leadership roles including Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at Goethe University (2009-2011) and Programme Chair of the Seventh Pan-European International Relations Conference in 2010.
Professor Nölke actively engages with public policy debates, recently appearing on Phoenix to discuss EU budget plans and participating in podcast discussions about global governance standards and democracy.
