Andreas Krebs is a Professor of Old Catholic and Ecumenical Theology and Director of the Old Catholic Seminary at the University of Bonn since 2015. He holds appointments in the Faculty of Theology and serves as editor of the journal 'Old Catholic and Ecumenical Theology.' Krebs actively participates in multiple ecumenical commissions including the German Ecumenical Study Committee (DÖSTA) and the VELKD-AKD Dialogue as Co-Chair.
His educational background includes studies in Old Catholic Theology, Philosophy, German Studies, Educational Sciences, and Mathematics at the Universities of Bonn, Hagen, Oxford, and Trier. He earned his doctorate from the University of Trier in 2006 with a dissertation on Wittgenstein's 'On Certainty,' and completed his habilitation in Systematic and Ecumenical Theology in 2015.
Krebs' research spans multiple interconnected domains with a focus on Old Catholic theology, ecumenical dialogue, and contemporary theological challenges. His work on the 'Theology of God' examines divine promise and failure through biblical interpretation, particularly Exodus 3:14. His contributions to 'Queer Theology' challenge traditional religious frameworks regarding sexuality and inclusion. Krebs' 'Theology in the Anthropocene' addresses ecological crises through religious perspectives, while his work in 'Empirical Church Research' investigates religious practice in secular societies.
His publication pattern reveals consistent scholarly productivity across multiple theological disciplines. Recent works demonstrate a growing focus on ecological theology and the Anthropocene, while maintaining strong engagement with Wittgenstein's philosophy of language and epistemology. Krebs frequently collaborates with other scholars, particularly in edited volumes that address contemporary theological challenges from multiple perspectives.
Krebs maintains significant academic affiliations including the Center for Religion and Society (ZERG), Center for Comparative Theology and Social Issues (CTSI), and the European Research Network 'Transcending Species – Transforming Religion' (TSTR). He serves on academic advisory boards for 'animate theologies' (Herder Verlag) and 'fem.phil | Contemporary Feminist Philosophy' (Metzler Verlag).
His professional activities extend beyond traditional academic work into practical theological engagement, serving on juries for the Ecumenical Sermon Prize and the Gender Studies Prize of the University of Bonn's Equal Opportunities Commissioner. Krebs also contributes to theological distance education through the Old Catholic Church's Theological Distance Course.
