Dr. Andreas Kolb is a Senior Research Fellow at the Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen, within the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. He has been in his current position since 2015, having previously served as a Research Fellow at the same institute from 2006-2015. His academic journey includes positions as Principal Investigator and Investigator at the Hannah Research Institute in Scotland, followed by postdoctoral and doctoral work at German universities.
Dr. Kolb's educational background includes a PhD from the Institute of Molecular Animal Breeding at the University of Munich (1989-1992), followed by postdoctoral research at the Institute of Virology and Immunology, University of Würzburg (1992-1997).
His primary research focuses on two interconnected areas: (1) the impact of secondary plant metabolites and toxins on metabolic health regulation through the gut microbiome and bile acid pathways, and (2) the influence of early life nutrition on adult metabolic health and aging processes. Dr. Kolb has developed cell-based assay systems to measure toxin concentrations in environmental and food samples, and his work explores how dietary components alter bile acid composition in the gut and serum.
Analysis of Dr. Kolb's recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on molecular mechanisms of metabolic regulation, genetic engineering approaches, and the relationship between nutrition and health outcomes. His work spans nutritional science, molecular biology, and toxicology, with particular attention to mammary gland development, protein biosynthesis, and metabolic programming across the lifespan.
As an educator, Dr. Kolb serves as Postgraduate Research Coordinator at the Rowett Institute and Chair of the PGR Liaison Committee for the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition. He teaches courses including ME2511 (Student Selected Components), SM2501 (Research Skills for Medical Sciences), SM2001 (Foundation Skills for Medical Sciences), and GN3502 (Genetics). He is an Associate Fellow of The Higher Education Academy.
Dr. Kolb currently supervises four PhD students (Khulod Hasaballah, Amane Alaroud, Amanda Mathieson, and Brendan Kesler) and has previously mentored four PhD students to completion (Alina Zitskaja, Patrikas Pultinevicius, Jennifer Harbottle, and Christopher Knowles). His research group investigates dietary and environmental impacts on metabolic health, focusing on bile acid signaling mechanisms and early life nutrition effects on adult health outcomes.
