Dr. Andreas Kafizas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London, leading the Solar Coatings Group within the Faculty of Natural Sciences. His research focuses on developing light-activated coatings for sustainable applications in renewable fuels, air purification, water remediation, and surface disinfection. He holds affiliations with the Grantham Institute, Energy Futures Lab, and the London Centre for Nanotechnology.
Education: MSci in Chemistry (University College London, 2007); PhD in Chemistry under Prof. Ivan Parkin (Imperial College London, 2011). Awards include the Ramsay Medal (2011), Ramsay Fellowship (2012), and Junior Research Fellowship (2016). He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and holds a Gold Award for EDI training at Imperial College.
Research Interests: Solar fuels production (H2O splitting/CO2 reduction), photocatalytic coatings for NOx removal, arsenic remediation, combinatorial materials discovery, and transient absorption spectroscopy. His work emphasizes scalable, low-cost methods using earth-abundant materials.
Publications: Over 90 peer-reviewed papers and 5 book chapters (h-index 49). Active in industry collaborations (e.g., CodiKoat, SmogStop® Barriers) and public engagement (Pint of Science, Imperial College Festival).
Teaching: Completed a Postgraduate Diploma in University Learning and Teaching; chairs the EDI committee at the London Centre for Nanotechnology.
