Dr Andreas Haag is a Lecturer in the School of Medicine at the University of St Andrews, specifically within the Infection and Global Health Division. His research focuses on understanding how mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus, influence bacterial evolution, virulence, and antibiotic resistance. His work aims to develop novel strategies to combat bacterial infections, with a particular emphasis on antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
Haag holds a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Aberdeen (2011) and a Biotechnology degree from Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences (2007). He has secured research funding from prestigious institutions such as The Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) and The Wellcome Trust, supporting projects like investigating PICI-phage interactions and toxin expression in clinical S. aureus strains.
His research interests include bacterial pathogenesis, MGE interactions, bacteriophage lifecycle regulation, and the role of pathogenicity islands. Key projects involve characterizing molecular mechanisms of MGE interactions and their impact on bacterial virulence and resistance, with applications toward antimicrobial therapy development.
Haag collaborates internationally and has presented his findings at conferences, focusing on topics such as prophage induction mechanisms and oxidative stress responses in S. aureus. His contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing global health challenges posed by AMR.
