Andreas Charitou

Andreas Charitou is a Professor at the Department of Accounting and Finance within the School of Economics and Management at the University of Cyprus. He served as Dean of the School of Economics and Management from September 2016 to December 2021 and previously as Vice Dean from 2006-2012. He has been Co-Director of the Ph.D. Program since 2001 and served as Co-Director of the MBA program from 2005-2016. Prior to his position at the University of Cyprus, he was an Associate Professor (with tenure) and Assistant Professor at the Rotman School of Business, University of Toronto (1986-1997), and an Instructor/Lecturer at The Pennsylvania State University (1983-1986).

His educational background includes a Ph.D. in Business Administration/Accounting (1983-1986) and a Master of Science in Business Administration/Accounting (1982-1983), both from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Accounting from the Economic University of Athens (ASOEE), Greece (1976-1980).

Professor Charitou's research focuses on Capital Markets Research, Corporate Governance, Corporate Finance, Investments, Financial Analysis, Bankruptcy prediction, Credit Analysis, and International Accounting. His work examines the relationship between financial reporting, capital markets, and corporate decision-making with particular attention to international contexts and regulatory frameworks. His extensive publication record spans over three decades, with recent work increasingly addressing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues, reflecting the growing importance of sustainability in financial markets.

His most recent publications (2022-2025) demonstrate continued scholarly productivity with articles in top journals including the Journal of Accounting Literature, The International Journal of Accounting, and Journal of Corporate Finance. These works address contemporary issues such as ESG reporting, article retractions in academic research, IFRS implementation effects, and environmental reporting evolution in Europe.
