Andreas Brekke Carlsson is an Associate Professor at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences, affiliated with the Department of Law, Philosophy and International Studies in Lillehammer. He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Oslo (2015). His research focuses on ethics, moral responsibility, blameworthiness, and environmental ethics, with notable work on self-blame and the temporal dimensions of moral accountability.
Before joining HiNN in 2019, he served as Secretary of the Ethics Council of the Norwegian Defense Sector and conducted research at the University of Oslo. His academic interests span meta-ethics, normative ethics, philosophy of law, and the philosophy of action.
Carlsson has published extensively on topics like desert-based ethics, the role of emotions in blame, and retributive justice. His work challenges traditional assumptions about moral responsibility, emphasizing the connection between guilt, shame, and control conditions. Notable contributions include editing Self-Blame and Moral Responsibility (2022) and analyzing the 'Debt Model' of blameworthiness in The Journal of Ethics (2024).
His research integrates theoretical ethics with practical applications in legal and military contexts, reflecting his engagement with real-world ethical dilemmas.
