Andrea S. Goldman is Associate Professor in the Department of History at UCLA's College of Social Sciences, specializing in cultural and social history of early modern and modern China. Her research focuses on urban history, performance, gender studies, and the politics of aesthetics through opera.
Education includes PhD from University of California, Berkeley (2005).
Research explores urban cultural dynamics in Qing Beijing through performance, examining how opera reflected court-city power relations. Current projects investigate transnational commercial sex culture in Chinese opera (1900-1950) and gossip historiography (1750-1850).
Publications demonstrate sustained focus on performance as historical lens, particularly Qing-era cultural politics and gender dynamics. Recent works examine nighttime performances and dramatic scripts as political texts.
