Andrea Rachow serves as Deputy Unit Head of the Unit Global Health (UGH) within the Environmental Health Center (EHC) at Helmholtz Munich. As a clinician-scientist with dual expertise in clinical medicine and epidemiology, she leads global research initiatives focused on tuberculosis care and post-tuberculosis lung disease (PTLD).
Education:
- Residency in Internal Medicine at Klinikum Merheim (Cologne), Charité University Hospital (Berlin), and LMU Klinikum (Munich)
- Master’s in Epidemiology from London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)
- Specialization in Tropical Medicine
Research Interests: Dr. Rachow’s work centers on tuberculosis-associated lung diseases, with pioneering contributions to PTLD understanding. Her TB Sequel project revealed that 30% of TB survivors suffer long-term lung damage, driving research into diagnostic protocols, therapeutic interventions, and socio-economic impacts through large-scale clinical cohorts across Africa. She integrates epidemiology, clinical medicine, and global health systems strengthening to address treatment gaps.
Advising and Grants: She has mentored numerous African Master’s and PhD students while leading capacity-building initiatives for respiratory healthcare. As Co-Director and Principal Investigator of the BMBF-funded TB Sequel project and RHISSA research network, she secures major international funding for PTLD cohort studies and clinical trials. She also advises the WHO on TB-associated lung disease guidelines.
Research Leadership: Dr. Rachow co-directs the TB Sequel Consortium and leads the Tuberculosis Research Group at LMU-Klinikum, coordinating multi-country teams across Tanzania, Mozambique, and Eastern Europe to advance tuberculosis elimination strategies.
