Henry M. Blumberg, MD, is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Emory University School of Medicine and Professor of Epidemiology & Global Health at the Rollins School of Public Health. He serves as Director of Clinical & Translational Research Training Programs at Emory and for the NIH-funded Georgia Clinical & Translational Science Alliance (Georgia CTSA), where he leads KL2/TL1 grants. His dual appointments reflect interdisciplinary expertise spanning clinical medicine and public health.
Education: MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine.
Research Focus: Dr. Blumberg's work centers on tuberculosis epidemiology (drug resistance, diagnostics, nutrition interactions), global health capacity building (Ethiopia, Georgia), and healthcare epidemiology. His NIH Fogarty-funded projects enhance TB research infrastructure internationally. Key methodologies include clinical trials, molecular epidemiology, implementation science, and pharmacometabolomics.
Publication Trends: Recent articles (2023-2025) demonstrate three dominant themes: 1) TB/HIV/diabetes comorbidities and treatment outcomes, 2) innovations in TB diagnostics and digital health tools, and 3) global research training program development. Over 50% of recent studies involve international cohorts.
Awards & Honors:
- Fellow, Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA)
- Fellow, Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America (SHEA)
Leadership: As MPI for NIH U19/P30 grants, he oversees translational TB research. He directs Fogarty training programs in Ethiopia/Georgia, building local research capacity. Previously chaired IDSA TB Committee and advised NIH ACTG Tuberculosis Transformative Science Group.
Labs & Teams: Leads the Emory/Georgia TB Research Advancement Center (TRAC) and collaborates with National TB Programs in Georgia/Ethiopia. His team specializes in clinical-translational TB research with ~20 members across microbiology, epidemiology, and implementation science units.
