Prof. Dr. Andrea Plöger is a Professor of Social Cultural Work with a focus on media education at Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences Berlin since 2020. She maintains consultation hours on Thursdays from 12:30 to 13:30 by appointment in Room 509.
Her educational background includes a Dr. phil. (Ph.D.) from the Institute of Political Science at the Free University of Berlin with dissertation titled "Making a Different World Visible. Media Representation, Strategies, and Communication in the World Social Forum Process," supported by the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation. She also studied ethnology, political science, and sociology with a focus on "ethnological film" at the Free University of Berlin.
Dr. Plöger's research spans media education, social cultural work, and global social movements. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks with practical applications in documentary filmmaking and media representation strategies within social justice contexts. She has been deeply engaged with the World Social Forum process since 2006.
Her current research focuses on the intersection of media, cultural work, and social movements, with particular attention to marginalized voices and alternative perspectives in global discourse. She examines how media representation can serve social justice causes and how cultural work intersects with movements for change.
Dr. Plöger leads the pilot project "Zwischenräume" within the Campus Transferale Project since 2023. She has upcoming engagements including a presentation at the Hellenic Mediterranean University of Crete in October 2024 on "Social Cultural Work in the context of the 'Zwischenräume' project" and "Climate Change and Social (Cultural) Work," followed by a study trip to Calais in November 2024 to document border situations and support work.
She is actively involved in documentary filmmaking, having collaborated on the "Forgotten Voices" film project examining conflict zones where "courage blends with fear and survival with sacrifice." Her work demonstrates a strong commitment to social justice, global solidarity, and innovative approaches to media education within social work contexts.
