Andrea Marie Frisch

Andrea Marie Frisch is a Professor in the Department of French & Italian at the University of Maryland, College Park, within the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Her research focuses on the intersection of historiography and literature in early modern France, particularly during the Reformation and the French Wars of Religion. She holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures from UC Berkeley.

Her work explores themes such as eyewitness testimony, memory, and the rhetoric of reconciliation in post-civil war France. She has authored two major books: The Invention of the Eyewitness (2004) and Forgetting Differences (2015). Current projects include Dispassionate Truths and The Library of the Enlightened Ethnographer.

Her recent articles analyze topics ranging from Louis Le Roy’s historiography to Jean de Léry’s travel narratives. She has received fellowships from the NEH, National Humanities Center, and other prestigious institutions. Her research also engages with Montaigne’s essays and the representation of civil conflict in tragedy and historiography.

Andrea Frisch frequently presents at conferences such as the Renaissance Society of America and has authored reviews in venues like Renaissance Quarterly. Her work bridges disciplines including history, literature, and cultural studies, reflecting her commitment to interdisciplinary early modern scholarship.
