Andrea MACLEOD is an Associate Professor at the University of Montréal's Faculty of Medicine, School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. She is also a researcher at CHU Ste-Justine. Her research focuses on bilingual phonological development in children, particularly those with developmental speech disorders. She holds a PhD from the University of Washington and has extensive international collaborations in multilingualism studies.
Dr. MACLEOD leads the Bilingual Child Phonology Lab, investigating phonological acquisition, speech motor control, and language interventions. Her work addresses gaps in supporting bilingual children's language development, especially in minority language contexts. Key contributions include studies on speech sound disorders, verbal dyspraxia, and the impact of bilingualism on clinical assessment tools. She has received major grants from SSHRC, CIHR, and the Canada Research Chairs program.
Selected awards include the Prix Engagement social étudiant (2017) and a SSHRC Insight Grant (2018-2024) for studying oral language trajectories in allophone children. She co-leads projects on refugee children's language adaptation and bilingualism in developmental disabilities. Her work bridges clinical practice and academic research to improve outcomes for children with communication disorders.
