Andrea Lorene Gutierrez serves as an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the Department of Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, College of Liberal Arts. Her academic journey includes a PhD in Asian Cultures and Languages from UT Austin (2020), an MA in the same field (2014), an MA in Translation and Interpretation from Universidad Complutense, Madrid (2004), and a BA in Art History (Honors) from University of Wisconsin-Madison (2001).
Her research spans interdisciplinary fields at the intersection of South Asian studies, food history, and animal studies. Gutierrez specializes in analyzing historical South Asian recipe collections, particularly focusing on medieval culinary practices documented in Sanskrit and Tamil texts. Her scholarship reveals how food functioned as a medium of religious expression, royal power, and cultural identity in pre-modern India. She also conducts groundbreaking research on human-elephant relationships in South Asia, examining how elephants served as political symbols, religious mediators, and cultural icons throughout history. Her methodological approach combines philological analysis of ancient texts with ethnographic fieldwork, creating a bridge between historical scholarship and contemporary issues.
Gutierrez's scholarly output demonstrates consistent innovation in recovering marginalized aspects of South Asian history. Her work on temple inscriptions has reconstructed lost culinary practices, while her analysis of elephant care manuals has illuminated complex human-animal relationships. The recurring theme across her publications is the examination of how material culture—whether food or animals—serves as a lens for understanding power dynamics, religious expression, and cultural continuity in South Asia.

Her teaching portfolio includes courses on Food and Religion in Asia, Yoga Past and Present, and Animals in Asia, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach to South Asian studies.
