Andrea Loettgers is a Research Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Vienna, affiliated with the Faculty of Philosophy and Education. Her research focuses on modeling practices in physics and biology, history of science, and epistemological questions. She holds a PhD in Physics from the University of Göttingen (1995) and a Habilitation in Philosophy of Science from the University of Bern (2019).
She has held positions at institutions including the California Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. Her work includes leading the ERC Project 'Possible Life' (2019-2022) and organizing conferences such as 'Understanding Life' (2016) and 'Toward a More Integrative View on Modelling' (2014).
Awards include the Bernoulli Fellowship (2016-2018) and grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Alfred Sloan Foundation. Her research bridges philosophy of science, history of science, and synthetic biology, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to modeling and epistemic frameworks.
