Andrea L Durst

Andrea L Durst is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh's Graduate School of Public Health. She serves as Vice Chair for Practice, Associate Director of the Genetic Counseling Program, and Director of the MPH in Public Health Genetics Program, with a focus on teaching, advising, and expanding access to genetic services since joining the faculty in 2015.

Her research integrates Public Health Genetics and Genetic Counseling, emphasizing cancer genetics, genetic literacy, and DEI initiatives to improve diversity, equity, and inclusion in genomic fields. Recent work explores workforce preparedness and educational frameworks for public health professionals.

She has contributed to collaborative studies on telegenetics during the pandemic, region-specific strategies for genetic service access, and national task force analyses of genetic counseling certification pathways. Her publications highlight interdisciplinary approaches combining genomics, education, and public health policy.

Durst mentors students through NYMAC Regional Genetics Network projects and APHA Genomics Forum initiatives. She co-chairs the Pennsylvania Cancer Coalition’s Cancer Genetics/Genomics Workgroup (2019–2025) and participates in professional leadership roles, including APHA Genomics Forum Chair and Associate Editor for the Journal of Community Genetics.
