Andrea Jelic is a tenure track lecturer in the Department of Architecture at KU Leuven's Faculty of Engineering Sciences. She is actively engaged in research at the intersection of architecture, health, and neurodiversity, with particular expertise in workplace design for autistic individuals and neurodivergent populations. Dr. Jelic holds multiple institutional affiliations including membership in the Leuven Centre for Health Humanities (where she serves on the Steering Committee), LC&Y - KU Leuven Institute for Child and Youth, and Leuven.IRD - KU Leuven Institute for Rare Diseases. She also participates in several governance bodies including the Faculty Council of Engineering Sciences and departmental councils for both Architecture and Civil Engineering.
Her research focuses on how the built environment affects human experience, with special attention to neurodivergent populations. Key areas include architectural atmospheres, sensory experiences in work environments, autism-friendly design, biophilic elements in workplaces, and the relationship between built environments and health outcomes. Dr. Jelic leads multiple significant research projects including 'Making Space for Autism at Work' (2023-2027), 'Workplaces for All Thinking Styles' (2025-2025), and 'The Role of Material Environment in Making Home: Experiences of Adult Third Culture Children' (2022-2026).
Dr. Jelic's scholarly output demonstrates a strong interdisciplinary approach combining architecture, health sciences, and cognitive psychology. Her recent publications reveal a consistent focus on participatory research methods, particularly in understanding autistic individuals' experiences of built environments. She examines how architectural atmospheres affect emotional and physiological responses, investigates workplace accommodations for neurodivergent individuals, and explores the therapeutic potential of indoor greenery.
