Andrea Flores is Vartan Gregorian Assistant Professor of Education at Brown University, specializing in cultural anthropology of education. Her research examines how education shapes immigrant and descendant communities' self-perception, transitions to adulthood, and social belonging in the U.S. She holds a Ph.D. and A.M. from Brown University and an A.B. from Harvard University.
Flores investigates Latino/a youth educational aspirations, undocumented student experiences, and the intersection of immigration policy with educational access. Her award-winning book The Succeeders analyzes how Latino youth in Nashville negotiate belonging amid nativist hostility. Current projects include a study on foreign-born life scientists' migration decisions and NSF-funded research on first-generation college students during COVID-19.
Her publications explore themes of educational mobility, legal-spatial consciousness, and care practices in immigrant communities. Awards include the 2022 Outstanding Book Award (Council on Anthropology of Education), Ford Foundation Fellowship, and teaching excellence honors.
Flores teaches courses on educational inequality, immigrant experiences, and youth development, emphasizing critical analysis of race, class, and citizenship.
