Specializing in the anthropology and archaeology of food, Dr. Cuellar investigates food systems, human-environment relations, and historical ecology. Her work examines agrarian history, regional-scale archaeological approaches, and comparative studies of social complexity and inequality across the Andes and Amazon.
Over 15 years, her publications demonstrate consistent engagement with foodways analysis, chiefdom studies, and environmental adaptation theories. Notably, her 2024 work on Oaxacan foodways expands her comparative framework to Mesoamerica, while maintaining focus on Andean and Amazonian contexts.
Dr. Cuellar actively contributes to academic discourse through publications in journals like American Antiquity, Latin American Antiquity, and Journal of Archaeological Research. Her collaborative work, such as the 2011 obsidian source characterization with Charles Knight et al., showcases interdisciplinary approaches to archaeological materials.
Expert in Spanish, Dr. Cuellar's research connects South American archaeological traditions with global theoretical frameworks. Her work addresses questions about centralization, societal complexity, and subsistence strategies through both empirical studies and critical reviews.
