Dr. Andrea Bombak is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of New Brunswick (Fredericton campus), serving as Director of Graduate Studies. Her research critically examines weight stigma, obesity-related policies, and pharmaceutical marketing strategies, with a focus on marginalized populations including sexual and gender minorities. She leads multiple SSHRC-funded projects investigating fatphobic social media messaging in MLM platforms and the marketing of GLP-1 Agonists like Ozempic. Her work also explores sugar-sweetened beverages in Indigenous communities and 'wine mom culture.'
Her research employs qualitative and mixed-method approaches, addressing topics such as bariatric surgery, post-secondary food education, and pandemic-era health governance. Dr. Bombak has co-authored books like Rethinking Obesity: Critical Perspectives in Crisis Times (2022) and collaborates on federally funded studies in rural Michigan and India.
Her supervision areas include stigma studies, critical health policy, gender and health, and self-perceptions of health. She actively critiques corporate misappropriation of health movements and advocates for equitable public health messaging.
