Andrea Barton Hulsey is an Assistant Professor in the College of Communication & Information at Florida State University. Her research examines linguistic skill development in children with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly those with limited speech capabilities. She investigates relationships between speech ability, vocabulary acquisition, phonological awareness, and literacy instruction access across early developmental stages.
Her interdisciplinary work focuses on three primary themes: 1) Identifying factors influencing reading outcomes in children with disabilities, 2) Mapping developmental trajectories of reading subskills, and 3) Creating accessible assessments and interventions incorporating Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems. Recent articles explore AAC implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic, family-centered intervention models, and literacy assessment adaptations.
Her research employs diverse methodologies including scoping reviews, intervention pilot studies, and longitudinal analyses. Key topics across publications include preschool literacy environments, disaster preparedness for AAC users, and equitable service delivery in school settings.
