Andrea Allen is an Assistant Professor jointly appointed in the Department of Anthropology and the Centre for Diaspora & Transnational Studies at the University of Toronto. She is currently on leave from September 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025.

Research Interests:
Dr. Allen’s work sits at the intersection of sociocultural anthropology, African and Latin American studies, and critical sexuality and gender scholarship. Her core themes include the anthropology of religion, global Christianities, queer anthropology, violence, embodiment, and the politics of race and sexuality within the African diaspora, with Brazil as her principal ethnographic site.
She has conducted extensive fieldwork on Afro-Brazilian religions such as Candomblé, same-sex sexuality, and gender performance. A second, ongoing book project explores LGBT evangelical Brazilians, race, religious identity, and sexual subjectivity in São Paulo and Lisbon.
