Dr. Andrea Achilli is an Associate Professor at the University of Arizona’s Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and Deputy Director of the WEST Center. He is also a member of the BIO5 Institute, focusing on membrane processes for water treatment, desalination, and energy recovery from water/wastewater.
- PhD: Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Nevada, Reno
- Work Experience: University of Arizona (2017–Ongoing), Humboldt State University (2012–2017)
His research explores membrane contactor processes, hybrid desalination systems, and process modeling. He has led studies on chlorination to extend RO membrane life, surrogate modeling using CFD and machine learning, and optimizing ultrafiltration for water reuse.
Recent publications highlight trends in membrane fouling mitigation (2023), high-salinity desalination (2020), and osmotic energy recovery (2014). His work often integrates computational fluid dynamics, sustainable engineering, and experiential learning.
Dr. Achilli teaches courses such as Water Treatment System Design, Water Reuse, and Chemical Engineering Design Principles. He advises PhD student Mervin Lim, who won awards for brine management research.
Collaborations include the Water Reuse Consortium, NAWI, and U.S. Army ERDC projects. He has presented at international conferences in Cape Town, Denver, and Phoenix, emphasizing multi-barrier water purification and techno-economic assessments using WaterTAP software.
