Andre Wyss is a Professor in the Department of Earth Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on vertebrate paleontology, stratigraphy, and the evolution of South American and Madagascan faunas. He has conducted extensive fieldwork in Chile, Argentina, and Madagascar, studying Cenozoic and Mesozoic fossils to understand biogeography and tectonic history. Wyss is known for his work on notoungulates, litopterns, and other extinct mammals, alongside geochronological studies of sedimentary basins. He advises graduate students including Christopher Everett and Zachary Jones.
Research interests include the paleobiology of extinct mammals, dinosaur biostratigraphy, and the impact of tectonic events on faunal evolution. His studies often integrate geological and paleontological data to reconstruct ancient ecosystems and continental movements. Wyss has contributed to understanding the break-up of Gondwana and the evolution of unique South American fauna.
Publications highlight discoveries such as early avemetatarsalians from Madagascar, Miocene sloths from Chile, and Oligocene rodent fossils. His work frequently involves collaborations with geologists and paleontologists to date formations and analyze fossil distributions.
