Dr. Andre Bongers is a Senior Research Fellow and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Scientist at the University of New South Wales (UNSW), where he manages the high-field MRI research facility at UNSW's Biological Resources Imaging Laboratory (BRIL), located at the Lowy Cancer Research Centre in Kensington. His work bridges medical physics, biomedical engineering, and clinical applications, with a focus on advancing MRI technology for disease diagnosis and monitoring.
Dr. Bongers' primary research interests include the development of novel acquisition methods, pulse sequences, and data evaluation techniques for physiological MR imaging. His work particularly emphasizes short-scale diffusion weighted imaging in prostate and brain cancer and quantitative susceptibility imaging in demyelinating diseases. His expertise spans medical physics, biological physics, biomedical instrumentation, and radiology, with a strong foundation in the physics of MRI techniques.
His publication record demonstrates consistent contributions to the field, with research trending toward increasingly sophisticated quantitative imaging biomarkers that can be translated to clinical settings. Recent work shows particular emphasis on developing imaging techniques that provide objective measures of disease progression and treatment response in cancer and neurological disorders.
As manager of UNSW's high-field MRI research facility at BRIL, Dr. Bongers oversees critical infrastructure that supports a wide range of biomedical research. His leadership in this role enables numerous research projects across multiple disciplines, facilitating collaborations between physicists, engineers, biologists, and clinicians.
